My university graduation was just a few weeks away. I had a great job making iPhone apps lined up for the spring and would be backpacking through Southeast Asia in the summer. In fewer words, my life felt on track. Then came the evening of May 28, 2012 when I received an indescribable phone call from my dad.
During that brief call, I learned that my 23-year-old cousin, friend and lifelong inspiration, Hayley, alongside her 2-year-old son, Cayden, were murdered by her husband before he took his own life also.
The weeks that followed tormented me in ways I had never known. I was trying to get better but nothing seemed to work. Looking back on it now, I can see the things that helped and the many things that didn’t. This book chronicles the months which followed that call and illustrates the lessons that, for the most part, transformed the most tragic and painful event in my life into a source of strength and inspiration.
